About Us
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is a dedicated organization committed to promoting the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy, and services. Founded in 1883, we are the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama, steadfast in our mission to provide a safe and loving home for every pet in our community.
Our primary goal is to support pet owners facing various challenges that may lead to pet surrender. We offer a range of services designed to help keep pets at home, including pet food and supplies, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, preventative care, pet identification and microchipping, behavioral and training assistance, and medical grooming for severely matted pets or overgrown nails. Additionally, we provide short-term emergency boarding for individuals in need, such as victims of abuse, seniors and veterans entering hospital care, individuals in short-term rehabilitation programs, and those experiencing homelessness.
One of our key initiatives is Supported Self-Rehoming, which aims to provide pet owners with the resources, services, and connections necessary to rehome their pets without them having to enter the shelter. Our Outreach Team is available to discuss options and provide assistance to pet owners in need.
We also operate as a managed intake facility, ensuring that there is a space available for incoming surrendered pets. While we understand that sometimes surrender is unavoidable, we strive to help pet owners explore all possible alternatives before making this difficult decision. If you are at risk of having to surrender your pet, we encourage you to reach out to our Outreach Team for support.
At the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, we believe in the importance of responsible pet ownership. We offer adoption services for cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, rabbits, ferrets, rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Our adoption process is designed to ensure that both the pet and the new owner make a great match. We provide detailed information about our adoptable pets, including their backgrounds and personalities, to help you find the perfect companion for your family.
We are committed to making a real difference in the lives of our pets and the community we serve. Our dedicated team of volunteers and staff work tirelessly to provide the best possible care for the animals in our shelter. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers who share our passion for animal welfare and are willing to contribute their time and energy to help us achieve our mission.
By choosing the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, you are supporting an organization that is deeply committed to the welfare of animals and the people who care for them. We look forward to continuing our mission of promoting humane treatment and providing essential services to our community.
