Dr. Jennifer Mathis, Board Certified Veterinary Dentist and Oral Surgeon
Family Pet Veterinary CenterDr. Jennifer Mathis grew up in a small town here in Iowa, but was originally born in Canada. She comes from a long line of Veterinarians including her Father, Grandfather, and Great Uncle. You may see her teenage daughter occasionally as she is considering continuing in the profession. Dr. Mathis graduated high school as Valedictorian and soon went on to receive her Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry in 1997. In 2001, she graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University.
Her focus in the animal industry is dentistry, and in July 2024 Dr. Mathis became a diplomate in the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) after training under Dr. Heidi Lobprise, DAVDC. Prior to formal dentistry training, she became a Certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturist and a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner with the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management in 2013.
Research shows that eighty-seven percent of dogs by age three have bone loss around their teeth due to periodontal disease. Other studies show 69-100% of cats by age 10 have a painful condition called tooth resorption. While one would think pets would stop eating, they rarely do. Most pets that stop eating are for reasons other than dental disease, though dental pain is still present. Dr. Jennifer Mathis knows that Dentistry is the greatest way to stop hidden pain in patients and offers specialty dentistry and oral surgery services through the Norwalk location. Her goal within the animal industry is to make people's lives better through pets, and what better way to do that than getting to the root of the issue?
