About Us
At Brewer Animal Hospital, we are dedicated to providing progressive, high-quality, and compassionate care to the pet-owning public of Springfield and surrounding communities. Our mission is to serve with integrity and respect, ensuring that every pet receives the best possible care.
Our History
Brewer Animal Hospital was founded in 1977 by Dr. Joseph Brewer, a long-time and esteemed Springfield veterinarian. The practice has grown significantly over the years, with a team of experienced and dedicated veterinarians who are committed to staying at the forefront of veterinary medicine. Dr. Thomas Thornburg joined the practice in 1980, bringing his expertise in reproductive medicine, and Dr. Evan Kirk joined in 1990, specializing in internal medicine and surgery. Dr. Rina Ward, who joined in 1995, has a special interest in exotic pets and has been a valuable addition to our team. Dr. Kellie Rucker, who joined in 2019, brings her expertise in surgery and internal medicine, further enhancing our capabilities.
Our Services
We focus exclusively on small animals such as dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, rodents, and other small mammals. Our services include a wide range of surgical procedures, from spays and neuters to tumor removals. We also offer dental cleaning, which involves a general anesthetic followed by an ultrasonic cleaning of all teeth surfaces. Our in-house lab and two licensed technicians enable us to quickly and accurately diagnose various conditions, including heartworm tests, fecal exams, blood chemistries, complete blood counts, and urinalysis.
We are committed to providing the best possible care for your pets. Our veterinarians and staff are dedicated to treating each pet with compassion and care, while providing our clients with respect, patience, and understanding. We regularly update our equipment, medications, and diagnostics to remain at the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Our digital X-ray technology provides exceptional quality radiographs that assist in diagnosis, and our ultrasound unit allows for non-invasive imaging of internal problems.
Additional Services
We offer health certificates for travel within the United States, which are required by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to be completed by a licensed veterinarian at least 10 days before travel. The certificates are valid for 30 days following. We also recommend AVID microchips for permanent identification of your pets, which greatly improves the chances of being reunited with your pet if it gets lost.
Our boarding services ensure that your pet is well cared for by experienced kennel staff members who maintain a clean environment with a large dose of TLC. We have various size cages and runs, as well as a large fenced yard for exercising dogs. We provide emergency and intensive care through regular business hours, although we work with the Animal Emergency Clinic of Springfield for after-hours emergencies.
