About Us
At the First State Animal Center and SPCA, our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic and farm animals. We are committed to preventing cruelty and suffering to animals, promoting compassion for all through outreach, education, and low-cost services. Our goal is to place unwanted pets into happy, healthy homes and to educate the public about responsible pet guardianship.
We have a long history of serving the community, dating back to 1953 when the Kent County SPCA was first established. Over the years, we have evolved to meet the growing needs of our community, expanding our services to include a wide range of programs aimed at reducing pet overpopulation through spay and neuter initiatives. Our shelter is the only one in the State of Delaware that can house and care for large animals, and we are contracted by the Delaware Department of Agriculture to hold stray or at-large animals until they are claimed or relinquished to us.
Our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide emergency medical treatment, temporary housing, and a safe environment for homeless animals. We are committed to maintaining high standards of care, ensuring that all animals in our facility are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before they become available for adoption. Our facilities include 76 canine kennels, 65 feline kennels, and a 4-stall horse barn, providing ample space for a variety of animals.
We believe in the importance of community involvement and education. We offer various programs and services designed to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce animal cruelty. Our low-cost services and fundraising events help us raise the funds necessary to support our efforts in caring for lost, unwanted, adoptable, and neglected animals.
At the First State Animal Center and SPCA, we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of animals and the people who care for them. We are dedicated to providing superior service and ensuring that every animal in our care finds a forever home where they can thrive. Join us in our mission to protect and enhance the quality of life for all animals.
