About Us
The Hawaiian Humane Society is dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. Our mission is to create a truly humane society based on compassion and shared responsibility. We envision a community where every companion animal has a home, and people highly regard and care for their own animals and all animals on O’ahu.
Our History
Founded in 1883 by 350 concerned citizens, including King Kalākaua, our organization has a rich history of advocating for the welfare of companion and working animals. Our first office was a cottage on the ʻIolani Palace grounds, and our mission quickly expanded to include the prevention of cruelty to children and the care of single mothers in need of assistance. Over the years, we have continued to evolve, focusing exclusively on animal welfare since 1935. In 1942, we moved to our current campus in Mōʻiliʻili, where we have since expanded our facility several times to meet the growing need.
Our Commitment
We are guided by the ideals of Socially Conscious Sheltering, which emphasizes shared responsibility and collaboration in support of people and their pets. Our core values include compassionate, humane care of animals, working inspirationally and effectively with people, and responsible stewardship of resources. We strive to create a humane community by handling and caring for animals entrusted to us with compassion and integrity.
