About Us
At Lawrence Humane Society, we are dedicated to nurturing the human-animal bond by providing shelter, care, and advocacy for homeless and vulnerable animals. Our mission is to support both pets and their owners in times of need, recognizing that pet homelessness affects our entire community. We believe in respecting and supporting both the pet and the pet owner, fostering a work culture that promotes compassion, innovation, and excellence.
For over 70 years, we have been a cornerstone of support for the Douglas County community. Our journey began in the 1940s with Norma Campschrader, a compassionate animal lover who envisioned a better future for pets in need. Since our founding, we have grown from a small house on Indiana Street to our current 18,000-square-foot facility on East 19th Street, where we shelter and care for more than 3,800 animals annually.
Our commitment to animal welfare is unwavering. We offer a range of services designed to support both animals and their owners. Our programs include low-cost spay and neuter services, community cat programs, and Project HELP. We also provide resources to pet owners experiencing crises related to poverty, houselessness, job loss, or other systemic issues through our Crisis Pet Retention Program. This program ensures that residents of Douglas County do not have to give up their pets due to financial hardship.
We are proud of our robust medical and behavior programs, which provide every animal in our care with the resources they need to be healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. Our team is made up of dedicated professionals who are passionate about animal welfare and committed to creating a positive and educational work environment. We believe in fostering a culture that prioritizes animal welfare and customer experience excellence.
