About Us
Michigan Humane Society
For over 138 years, the Michigan Humane Society has been dedicated to improving and saving lives through compassionate care, community engagement, and advocacy for animals. Founded in 1877, we are the oldest and largest nonprofit animal welfare organization in Michigan. Our mission is to protect, defend, and celebrate the animals of Southeast Michigan, fostering a society where one's actions reflect consideration, honesty, respect, fairness, compassion, and responsibility toward oneself, other people, animals, and the environment.
Our Focus
Our primary focus is on companion animal issues, recognizing the complex and multifaceted relationship between humans and nonhuman animals. We believe that humans have a significant impact on all animals, particularly those that are dependent on us for their well-being. Therefore, we strive to ensure that all companion animals have human guardians to provide love and care for their physical, medical, behavioral, and emotional well-being throughout their natural lives.
General Services
We provide a wide range of services aimed at improving the lives of animals and the community. Our services include:
- Sheltering and Veterinary Care: We operate several facilities dedicated to caring for animals, offering shelter, veterinary care, and emergency rescue services.
- Adoption Partnerships: We partner with local pet supply stores to facilitate the adoption of animals into new homes.
- Cruelty Investigations: Our dedicated team investigates cases of animal cruelty, working to protect animals from abuse and neglect.
- Humane Education: We believe in the importance of humane education, which helps foster a society that values compassion and respect for all living beings.
- Community Engagement: We engage with the community through various programs, including volunteer opportunities and community service initiatives.
Our Commitment
At the Michigan Humane Society, we are committed to maximizing each animal's opportunity for a live outcome while reducing unnecessary euthanasia. We believe in creating alliances and working together to achieve more than we could individually. Our approach is guided by our principles and beliefs, which emphasize the importance of compassion, respect, and responsibility towards animals and the environment.
We are more than just an animal shelter; we are your voice for animal welfare. We are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals and the community, and we couldn't do it without the support of our volunteers, donors, and community members. Thank you for being part of our mission to create a safer, more compassionate world for all animals.
