About Us
At Norfolk Naval Station Veterinary Activity, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive veterinary services and public health support to the Department of Defense (DoD) population in the Hampton Roads area. Our team of 55 military and civilian personnel is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of over 400,000 personnel and 11 DoD installations.
Our services encompass a wide range of activities, including food safety and animal care. We serve as the DoD executive agent for food safety and animal care in our region, overseeing food safety and food defense inspection operations for 103 ships of the United States Navy Fleet Forces Command and 136 establishments. This critical work ensures force readiness by inspecting over $500 million of subsistence annually.
We also provide medical and surgical care for more than 35 permanent and transient Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Multipurpose Canines. Additionally, we offer guidance for stray animal and rabies/zoonotic disease control programs, ensuring the safety of both humans and animals in our community.
Our collaboration with local, state, and federal public health officials supports the OneHealth initiative, promoting a holistic approach to health that integrates human, animal, and environmental health. Our team is led by four veterinarians, eight animal health assistants, and three clerical staff, all working together to provide world-class public health support in support of force readiness.
At Norfolk Naval Station Veterinary Activity, we are proud to serve our community with expertise and dedication. Our mission is to protect and promote the health of our personnel and their pets, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for everyone. We are committed to excellence in all aspects of our work, from food safety inspections to veterinary care, and we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.
