About Us
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) is a local, private, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to animal welfare. We are an open admission shelter, accepting many pet animals who might be refused at other shelters, as well as taking care of injured and orphaned native wildlife. Our mission is to provide a safe haven for animals in need and to find them loving homes.
We have been serving this community since the early 1950s, and our commitment to animal welfare has earned us a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator and a Platinum-level Transparency rating from Candid. We are also a top-rated nonprofit by Great NonProfits. Our work means almost 5,000 lives saved each year, and we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of both animals and people.
Our primary goal is to adopt out 100% of the healthy, adoptable dogs and cats in our care. Through our charitably funded Hope Program, we also make well and find homes for thousands of animals who come to us sick, injured, or too young to survive without supportive care. We provide routine daily care, as well as emergency care, for all our animals, including those awaiting stray periods and others available for adoption.
For domestic animals, our goal is to reunite them with their owners or re-home them with adopters. For wildlife, we strive to rehabilitate them as soon as possible while minimizing contact to avoid imprinting, then return them to their natural habitats. Our donor-supported Hope Program enables us to make well and find homes for approximately 150 animals per month.
We are proud to offer a wide range of services, including adoption of cats, dogs, small animals, and exotic animals. Our adoption package includes medical and behavior evaluations, vaccinations, spaying or neutering, microchipping, and flea, tick, and de-worming treatments. We also provide 14 days of post-adoption limited medical care, a temporary leash or carrier, and a discount on behavior classes.
Our facilities include the Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame, where you can observe our Kitten Nursery, Wildlife Treatment room, and more. We also have the Coyote Point Shelter in San Mateo, where you can look for lost pets, surrender unwanted or stray animals, and visit our Spay/Neuter Clinic and vaccination clinics.
At PHS/SPCA, we prioritize the health, safety, and future well-being of the animals in our care and the health, safety, and expectations of people hoping to find an animal companion. We are committed to providing an outstanding level of care and ensuring that every animal finds a loving home. If you are considering adopting a new companion or need assistance with your pet, we invite you to visit us and experience the difference we make in the lives of animals and people alike.
