About Us
Companion Animal Alliance (CAA) is a dedicated organization founded in 2010 by a group of passionate advocates for animal welfare in the Baton Rouge area. Our mission is to make the Baton Rouge community a better place for people and pets, together. We operate as the only open-intake animal shelter in East Baton Rouge Parish, caring for over 9,000 animals annually, including cats, dogs, wildlife, livestock, and other exotic house-pets.
Our Mission
Our mission is multifaceted and centered around reducing the number of animals entering shelters. We achieve this by providing resources to pet owners, increasing spay/neuter efforts, and treating animals humanely while they are in our care. We guarantee strong medical care and provide socialization opportunities to ensure the well-being of every animal in our shelter. Additionally, we strive to find forever homes, foster homes, or rescues for lost and abandoned animals by making information on adoptable animals easily accessible to the public and coordinating volunteers and pet transports.
Key Programs
One of our core programs is Pets for Life Baton Rouge, which aims to bring free animal care, services, and information directly to underserved communities in Baton Rouge. This program is committed to the belief that a lack of financial means does not equate to a lack of love for pets. Since 2015, we have collaborated with the Feral Cat Coalition to spay/neuter and return thousands of community cats as part of a Trap-Neuter-Release program (TNR).
We also prioritize pet-owner reunification efforts. In 2023, we saw a 9% increase in the number of animals reclaimed by their owners, with an overall return-to-home rate of approximately 11%, which is higher than the national average. We cover the cost of ordinance violation fines for owners who cannot afford them, ensuring that no one loses their beloved pet due to financial restrictions.
Community Support
Our commitment to the community extends beyond animal care. We provide access to veterinary care through various initiatives, including door-to-door outreach efforts, satellite vaccine clinics, and partnerships with local veterinary services. In 2023, we provided 1,200+ Pets for Life services, ensuring that pets in underserved areas receive essential care and strengthening the bonds between pets and their owners.
Volunteer and Community Involvement
We value the human-animal bond and prioritize keeping people and pets together. If you are not in a position to adopt, foster, or volunteer, please consider being a community advocate for your local animal shelter. Our day-to-day operations and commitment to making our community a better place for people and pets depend on the generosity of donors, sponsors, and supporters like you.
At Companion Animal Alliance, we are more than just a shelter; we are a vital part of our community, serving as an invaluable resource for animal welfare in East Baton Rouge Parish. Our organization aims to support our community, people, and pets in any way possible, ensuring that every animal receives the care and love they deserve.
